4. Bringing In One Impact Veteran

The time has now come to start bringing in a veteran or two who can guide this young team in the right direction. While Channing Frye was meant to be that guy, he struggled last season, although he did improve towards the end of the campaign. He’s also a moveable piece that would surely appeal to a contending team, something else to keep in mind.

But what Orlando now needs is legitimate league established talent to fill out their roster. They have plenty of guys with promise and potential, and even a few guys who look on course to realize some of that next year (Victor Oladipo, Nikola Vucevic). But a guy who is not only an NBA player, but one of the better players in the league in his position, is important for this team right now.

A second tier star who can help change the mentality and perception of the franchise. Should the team possibly overpay to secure a guy like this? I think so, as really it’s probably the only way you get a guy with considerable talent to join the team at this moment in time. One potential issue here though, is general manager Rob Hennigan has been pretty tight with money since taking over the position.

For the most part that’s been a great thing, the Magic’s finances are in good shape while they’ve made the most of draft picks and modest veteran signings. But the next level is surely bringing in a guy who right away is the best player on the team, or at least capable of being on any given night.

That player’s position on the court may not become clear until the team drafts/sorts out the Harris situation. If trading away players/picks to get that guy is what needs to be done as well, then so be it. It’s time to shift away from rebuilding and into trying to be successful mode, and sacrificing part of the future to be better now is a part of that.
