1. Find The Right Head Coach

Although interim head coach James Borrego did a good job when asked to take over as the main man during the season, surely Orlando will look to a more established individual to lead them into a brighter future. This is not a knock on Borrego, a guy who will surely get his chance to run a team full time one day. On top of that, I would also hope that he is allowed to return to his role as an assistant with the team as well. It will help him grow and he clearly has a positive relationship with many of the players on the team already.

But with the word out that Tom Thibodeau has been put out of his misery and let go by the Chicago Bulls, there are clearly head coaches available that can take this team back to the playoffs. Thibodeau is one such guy, although his relentless approach to the game and the toll it takes on his players has been well documented.

Scott Skiles has the history (He did play for the team) and the pedigree of taking teams to the playoffs in the past that appeals to some. (My opinion on that would be that I’m in favor of hiring him, but another coach would have to be brought in to get this team over the top once they’ve experienced a few seasons of playoff basketball).

Monty Williams was doing great things with the New Orleans Pelicans before being let go, while the likes of Mark Jackson and Scott Brooks are also out there. The point is, there’s real quality to be found, and Orlando boasts the young talent, nice living conditions and still relatively modest expectations that would appeal to an experienced coach. Picking the right guy for this group however, is hugely important.
