The Based God’s Effect On The NBA; And What It Means For The Atlanta Hawks
By Ti Windisch
Do you keep hearing things or seeing Tweets about the Based God and his curse? Do you have no idea who Lil B is and need to know his relationship to Kevin Durant, James Harden, and the Atlanta Hawks? Do you think this is all the ridiculous product of millennials and their rampant social media use? Let me explain more about Lil B, and why his curses and blessings are so important to NBA players and teams.

First things first: I absolutely believe in the power of a Lil B (a rapper/motivational speaker/author/point guard also known as the Based God) curse. After seeing the extreme effects of Lil B’s curse on (former?) NBA superstar Kevin Durant I have no intention to start any sort of feud between myself and the Based God. For more information on that particular curse, check out this great Andrew Sharp article about it here (but be warned, there’s a lot of foul language involved).
The gist of the curse is that sometime around 2011 KD took to Twitter to call Lil B a “wack rapper”, in the Based God’s words. Lil B retaliated by cursing Durant and the Oklahoma City Thunder, proclaiming the sharpshooting small forward would never win a title. Since then, although they had a powerful team and a few good opportunities, the Thunder never have won a championship. Point: Lil B.
Things seem to have gotten worse for Durant and the Thunder since, whether it be the awful James Harden trade, multiple injuries to Russell Westbrook and Durant himself, or just coming up short in the postseason. There was talk of a 1-on-1 showdown between Lil B and Durant that has not yet happened, although the rapper seems awfully set on taking down Durant once and for all.
It seemed as though the Based God was intent on only using his powers on Durant for his public diss of Lil B’s music, but that all changed last week when Lil B claimed that James Harden had stolen his signature cooking move. Although the Based God claims Harden is not yet cursed, he better answer Lil B’s claim that his dance is stolen and pay homage before things get any worse than this.
But let’s get to the real point of this article. After all, I’m an Atlanta Hawks writer, and although Lil B clearly has an important impact on the whole league, Atlanta has not been involved. Until early afternoon on Friday, that is, when Grantland writer Rembert Browne sent a plea to the Hawks to beg the Based God to not curse them. And they did.
And this is where the story gets good. Lil B did not just not curse the Hawks, he gave them the Based God’s blessing, saying the “Hawks deserve great things and the city of Atlanta!!!” Could this mean that DeMarre Carroll will be able to play tonight? Or that Atlanta will beat the Cleveland Cavaliers and move on to the NBA Finals? Or even that the Hawks will be victorious in their next two series and win the NBA Title?!
I’m not exactly sure. The Based God also cheers for the Golden State Warriors, so if those two teams met in the NBA Finals it’s unclear which team would earn the necessary based blessing to be victorious. It is clear that Lil B’s curses (and even the threat of his curses) can have quite damaging effects on NBA players, but I’m not sure what his well wishes can accomplish. I suppose we’ll find that out tonight.
And don’t be surprised if Jeff Teague goes off for 50 points or a triple-double (or both) tonight after being personally complimented by Lil B in that tweet. Just remember to say one of his many catchphrases after the game: Thank You Based God.
And please don’t curse me or any player on my Milwaukee Bucks. I don’t need that evil in my life.
BREAKING NEWS EDIT: I just saw on Twitter that Hawks organist Sir Foster is going to play a Lil B song at the game tonight. This story is growing, folks.
