Sterling Gibbs, formerly of Seton Hall; Immediately Eligible

2014-15 Stat Line: 16.3 points, 2.1 rebounds, 3.8 assists, 1.2 steals, 43% field goals, 43% three-pointers

In a rather surprising move, Sterling Gibbs announced on Tuesday that he would be transferring from Seton Hall for his final year and will be immediately eligible.

Gibbs had a very solid year but he and the Pirates hit a downward spiral they were never able to recover from midway through the year. After starting the year 13-3, Seton Hall lost 12 of its final 13 games and internally combusted towards no postseason appearance after appearing to be a sleeper threat for the NCAA tournament.

Their struggles simmered for a while but came to a boil with this “controversial” play involving Gibbs, who elbowed Villanova’s Ryan Arcidiacono in a scrum for a loose ball.

Gibbs, a versatile 6-foot-2 scoring guard, should be extremely sought after on the transfer market and will have a number of teams in search of his services. Of course, this all came about rather quickly and it’s not going to happen overnight, but CBSSports.com’s Sam Vecenie offers two destinations that make a lot of sense:

Texas

With Shaka Smart in as the new head coach and the return of Isaiah Taylor, Texas will certainly be a threat in the Big 12, but will be facing rather loaded squads in Kansas, Iowa State and Oklahoma. Adding Gibbs to the mix would really put them over the top and provide a three-point shooter that the Longhorns lacked throughout the 2014-15 season.

The other choice of Vecenie is Gonzaga:

As mentioned with Nigel Williams-Goss, Gonzaga is depleted at guard but has great talent in the post with Kyle Wiltjer and Domas Sabonis. Adding Gibbs to this duo would make things every easier for the Zags to claim another West Coast Conference championship and make them an easy top 10 team entering next season.

There’s no telling where Gibbs’ recruiting is going to go and it’s entirely possible Texas and Gonzaga don’t even get in on the recruitment process, but it would be surprising to see neither team in on Gibbs’ services, even if it is just for one year.

Guess: Gibbs to Texas
