Potential X-Factor

Mike Conley

I’ve got to go with Conley despite the fact he’ll probably be the second-best point guard on the court in any series the Grizzlies play. Statistically he’s had better seasons, but he’s about involving others. He’s a classic kind of floor general in that respect. His jumper is pretty and he can get to his spots, but he’d rather beat his man, force the defense to collapse and give it to a teammate.

Like Gasol, I’m not sure another team could get the best out of Conley the way Memphis do. He’s not asked to carry the scoring burden like many of his peers, but he chips in when necessary with near All-Star numbers in that category. He’s a 39 percent three point shooter as well, something many people forget. He can hurt you from long range.

I’ve often felt watching him play that he could grab a game a take it over if he wanted to, but that he’s comfortable letting the game come to him and setting the table for others. Does that translate to winning a championship? No, but it’s his style, and it suits this team. He’s also got a great defensive mind and can stay in front of his man and lock down a lot of guard as well.

He could do with being a little more aggressive once the playoffs start though. But with teams planning for and potentially double-teaming Gasol, as well as banging with Randolph, Conley will get his looks. Throw in Lee and old man Carter who defenses have to account for, and he’s the kind whose big plays could seem them win a game or two.
