Anthony Davis leapfrogs Russell Westbrook in our top five simply for the fact that his team just did the same thing to Westbrook’s team in the standings last night. Davis’ unholy Player Efficiency Rating certainly doesn’t hurt his case, nor is it bad that he made big-time shots for his team down the stretch last night against the NBA’s best team.
Despite having very little help, a banged up roster for most of the year and a coach who’s really holding the Pellies back, Davis is on the verge of carrying New Orleans (with some help from Tyreke Evans) to the promised land. What’s scary is this guy is only 22 years old and is already putting himself in the same boat as legends like Tim Duncan, David Robinson and Hakeem Olajuwon:
Unfortunately, even if the statistics speak to Davis’ MVP candidacy, his team’s success isn’t quite where it needs to be. It’s also kind of hard to feel the sense of urgency you regularly associate with the MVP Award because he’s still so young.
We don’t know for sure that these are peak seasons we’re seeing from Harden and Curry, and therefore, we feel the need to reward one of them for this season before it’s too late. But with Davis, we know we’re just seeing the tip of the iceberg. We know this kid is going to win the MVP Award one day soon. Until he overwhelmingly dominates everyone else in the race, Davis should take a backseat to career years from Curry/Harden.
