Round 1 Pick 17: Devin Booker – Kentucky, SG, 6’6″

This was a tough pick because I think the back end of the first round has a lot of future NBA talent. The Bucks have a lot of unknowns on their roster and few players are locked in as starters. The center position and the point guard position are definitely spots that need improvement and whether that improvement can come from a current Bucks’ player is still to be seen. Regardless, a young team such as the Bucks should be picking the best player available.

With the elite center and wing prospects off the board by this point, Devin Booker would be terrific value at pick 17.

Devin Booker is an elite shooter with potential to fill out as an overall scorer. He’s shooting 41.1 percent from deep and 82.7 percent on free throws, displaying excellent form on his jumper.

When’s he not busy knocking down threes and reloading his shot(gun),

or making every teenage girl in America fall in love with him,

he’s throwing lob after lob to one of Kentucky’s monstars.

He’s no slouch on defense either with a 91.2 in-conference defensive rating (per sports-reference), which ranks eighth best in the SEC.

The man plays with confidence and intelligence, two qualities that often get overlooked in the modern age of freak athletes such as last year’s number one selection, Andrew Wiggins.

The Bucks lack much depth behind Khris Middleton at the shooting guard and O.J. Mayo seems unlikely to be brought back after the last year of his contract expires next season.

Poor defense is often a cause for not being able to justify playing a young player, but Devin Booker should have no trouble on that end. If drafted by the Bucks, he’d receive a fair amount of bench minutes and likely develop into a reliable contributor by the end of his rookie season.
