Orlando Magic: 5 Reasons To Be Optimistic About The Future
By Luke Duffy
5. The Ability To Be Flexible
While we see far less albatross like contracts in the NBA anymore, general manager Rob Hennigan has still done a great job in keeping this team in great shape financially for the future.
We’ve spoken about Vucevic’s fair deal, while veterans like Channing Frye are also not weighing the team down (four years at $32 million, with the amount owed each season slowly decreasing each year). Ben Gordon, signed last season to a two year, $9 million deal, has the second year of the deal non-guaranteed.
It basically means if a move comes along that the Magic like, they can pull the trigger on it. Gone are the days when Rashard Lewis was making insane money. The team can cut ties with the dead wood here, can trade away veterans like Frye without much hassle while also keeping their own players like Vucevic around for the right price.
While this probably won’t be a big deal this summer, next year when this young nucleus is ready to take the next step, a big name free agent will probably be brought on board. All in all, the bigger picture leaves plenty to be positive about moving forward.
