12. 1956-57 North Carolina Tar Heels

The Tar Heels became the first ACC program to win a national championship in 1956-57 when they defeated Wilt Chamberlain and the Kansas Jayhawks by one in the title game. The best part of the game was at the tip, believe it or not, when North Carolina head coach Frank McGuire sent out 5’11” Tommy Kearns -who happened to be the smallest player on the court – to jump against Chamberlain in an effort to psyche him out. North Carolina was led by Lennie Rosenbluth and his 28 points a game. Unlike the other teams, the Tar Heels had a triple overtime win in the Final Four, before turning around the next night and beating Kansas, also in triple overtime to secure an undefeated season.
