Apple, Cherry, Blueberry (?)…ALL of the Turnovers
#5 West Virginia Mountaineers use incredible defensive pressure to knockout #4 Maryland Terrapins, 69-59
Somebody has to play Kentucky, and it’ll be West Virginia, who used its pressure and quick hands on defense to force 23 turnovers and come up with 15 steals to take care of business against Maryland and advance.
With Juwan Staten having an off night on offense, it was Devin Williams who led the Mountaineers with game-highs in points (16) and rebounds (10). Three other players had double-digit scoring nights for WVU as well, including Gary Browne, who went for 14 points and came up with five steals. Jevon Carter led the team with six steals of his own.
Before being knocked out of the game with a little over eight minutes left, Melo Trimble had a fantastic night for Maryland, shooting 5-for-6 from the field and 2-for-2 from three for 15 points to go with a team-high seven rebounds. Trimble left with an apparent concussion after being rocked by what should’ve been called an illegal screen, followed by being accidentally kicked in the head by teammate Damonte Dodd.
Dez Wells struggled to be the primary ball handler without Trimble with eight turnovers being credited to him.
West Virginia is making the most of its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2012, advancing to its first Sweet 16 appearance since 2010 when it advanced to the Final Four. The team they beat to get to that Final Four? Kentucky.
Maryland finishes the season with a 28-6 record.
