He’s Beloved

I think Curry is the only player on Golden State’s roster more beloved than Draymond Green. By the way, Curry is a freaking MVP candidate. That in and of itself is a testament to how important and universally adored Green is for the Bay Area community.

For a team that can contend for a title this year — not to mention the next couple of years with such a young core — continuity is important. The front office was willing to pay up this past summer to keep their sniper Thompson around and preserve the Splash Brothers backcourt. Now they need to do the same for quite possibly the second most important player on the roster.

Green’s hard work and status as an underdog DPOY candidate have endeared him to fans, but it’s so much more than that. He’s become a cult classic, an urban legend whose every post-game quote or on-court celebration feeds into the larger narrative that states he’s become the heart and soul of the Golden State Warriors.

From throwing grapes at Seattle Seahawks fans to wagging his tongue at Blake Griffin to staring down a Los Angeles Clippers reserve who bumped him, Green is nearly impossible for Warriors fans to criticize. Letting him go this summer would send the wrong message to that fanbase and it’s no wonder the early signs are that the front office will match any offer for him.
