3. Jamal Mashburn

3 seasons, 18.8 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 51% FG

Before there was John Wall, there was Jamal Mashburn. There’s no one more important to commit to the University of Kentucky than Mashburn. As a highly rated recruit from the Bronx, he made the unlikely decision to go south to a program coming off life support.

He put his trust in head coach Rick Pitino and the two combined to put Kentucky back on the map of college basketball. In 1992, the first year Kentucky could play in the NCAA Tournament again, Mashburn led the Wildcats to the Elite Eight in which they lost to Duke in what’s called the greatest college basketball game ever played.

Mashburn left Kentucky with 1,843 points, good enough for sixth all-time at Kentucky. Named an All-American in 1993, Mashburn’s legacy is well-beyond that as his commitment to Kentucky allowed the success throughout the rest of the decade.
