Kentucky Wildcats: 30 Greatest Players in School History

15. Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
1 season, 11.9 points, 7.4 rebounds, 1.9 assists, 21.2 PER
If you’re going strictly by numbers, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist has absolutely no right to be named the 15th best player in Kentucky’s illustrious program. But, that’s the beauty about basketball. There’s more to it than simple numbers.
Kidd-Gilchrist was the epitome of a defensive wizard. The athletic wing provided Calipari with the ability to trap whenever he wanted and play whatever type of lineup he wanted to, because Kidd-Gilchrist could guard every position.
Not to mention his defensive prowess came through when it mattered the most. When Kansas was making a run in the national championship game, Kidd-Gilchrist got beat backdoor. However, he didn’t give up on the play and made a sensational block at the rim to preserve the win for the Wildcats. The fan favorite was named second team All-American during his one year at Kentucky.
