Russell Westbrook: 5 Reasons He’s The NBA MVP
By Evan Massey
5. Carrying His Team Towards The Playoffs
There weren’t many fans or analysts that expected the Oklahoma City Thunder to get through all of the games that Kevin Durant has missed and still be in the playoff picture at this point in the season.
Russell Westbrook has put his team on his back and helped lead them to the 33-27 record and eighth seed that they currently hold. Without him on the court, the Thunder would have wilted and died immediately when they heard that Durant was out for a decently long period of time twice in a season. The word “quit” is not in Westbrook’s dictionary, and he has embraced the challenge.
It was obviously from the first time that Westbrook stepped onto the court this season that he had an extra motivation knowing that the team was his. He has played so well this season that there are some people questioning whether or not he has surpassed Durant as the face of the franchise.
Obviously the Thunder are going to need Westbrook to dominate down the stretch and into the postseason to have a chance. They are definitely underdogs in the Western Conference at this point in time, but fans can never say never when Westbrook is on the court.
