As is always the case in these situations, the interim head coach will get the chance to show the front office something for the remainder of the season. Take James Borrego and the Orlando Magic, for example. Since firing Jacque Vaughn, Orlando’s interim has kept the Magic around the .500 mark, which is much better than the 15-37 record the team had compiled under Vaughn.

No guarantees Borrego sticks as the new head coach past this season, but Hunt will have the same opportunity to show improvement for the rest of the season. This is Hunt’s third season serving as an assistant coach with the Nuggets and he has a good relationship with Danilo Gallinari after spending the past two summers in Italy working with him.

Before joining Denver’s coaching staff, Hunt was an assistant with the Cleveland Cavaliers for five years. During that stretch, the Cavs won a franchise-best 66 games, reached the 2007 NBA Finals and appeared in the 2009 Eastern Conference Finals.
