Biggest Need: Cap Relief

The Sacramento Kings have hired George Karl to be their new head coach. This move is considered to be an upgrade in the sense that Karl is known for his ability to get his players to buy into a system.

It doesn’t change the fact that the front office squandered an opportunity at progress with an All-Star center by firing the well-liked Mike Malone.

DeMarcus Cousins is finally receiving recognition for his elite-level play, but that hasn’t translated to wins. Darren Collison and Rudy Gay have both performed well, but the rest of the roster is flawed in its nature.

There’s no rim protector, lockdown perimeter defender or second unit scorer, and there isn’t enough perimeter firepower to space the floor for Cousins to efficiently work down low.

Karl could be the coach necessary to get the most out of players such as Ben McLemore and Nik Stauskas. He could also be a big name hired to continue building the illusion of a team that’s competing.

Carl Landry will make $6.5 million in each of the next two seasons and Jason Thompson is due upwards of $6 million in the same time frame, which leaves Sacramento with one harsh reality: it needs to make a move.

Cap relief is vital for a team with a player of Cousins’ caliber and star power. The Kings need to make it happen.
