Phoenix Suns: Time to Trade Goran Dragic
By Greg Chin
3. The Likelihood of Re-Signing
This week, a report surfaced that the Los Angeles Lakers were planning on offering Goran Dragic a max contract in the offseason. Due to his experience in the league, the contract could be starting at $19 million and be worth $80 million over four years.
The Phoenix Suns could offer him more money and an extra year on the deal, but are they likely to? The Suns already have $60 million in guaranteed salaries for next season, and have to decide on whether they intend to re-sign Brandan Wright and Gerald Green. Tying Dragic to a $19 million first-year contract would hamper their long-term flexibility, and hurt their chances of adding more quality players to the roster.
The salary cap is set to spike in 2016, which would make Dragic’s max contract hit seem less severe, but the organization has to ask itself – is Dragic really worth a max contract with the Suns?
