New Orleans Pelicans: King Cake Baby is Back!
By Owen Sanborn
Guess what time it is?
That’s right, it’s Mardi Gras time down in New Orleans, meaning the
terrifying
nauseating
triumphant return of King Cake Baby and his gigantic diaper.

Much to the chagrin of young children and anyone who is capable of being terrified by anything really, King Cake Baby is is sporting the same facial features as the past. Those piercing blue eyes (and not the cool kind like when a good looking woman with dark hair has them) stare deep into your soul and perhaps even through it.
King Cake Baby is derived from the pastry king cake that is made for Mardi Gras. A plastic figurine of a baby is baked into the dough and whoever is lucky enough to slice a piece with it in it is supposed to have good luck for the rest of the year.
It has not been made clear whether the figurine made for the actual cake has caused infinite amounts of nightmares like the King Cake Baby mascot. Luckily, a drunk civilian will not have to bite into a king cake on Mardi Gras and have the piercing blue eyes staring daggers at them. That would be the opposite of good luck.
The Pelicans have had a promotion going where they will offer special prizes and tickets if you go and find King Cake Baby at new locations. Tuesday’s location was the Domino’s on Freret Street and the way this tweet portrays King Cake Baby could not make going to Domino’s less inviting:
He is riding a scooter (I assume a Razor scooter because that’s what all of the cool kids rode back in my day) and has the facial expression of a deranged sociopath. Quite frankly, a deranged sociopath may be putting things lightly.
I would love to know the number of fans that showed up to Dominos and whether or not they brought their children with them. Would one even take pictures with this … thing?
Zach Lowe — esteemed writer for Grantland and the unofficial commissioner for all mascot affairs — has yet to weigh in on the situation, but I am on standby once he finds the words (which will certainly be a challenge).
The Pelicans have been known to swing and miss with their mascot designs. Remember the original Pierre the Pelican and all of his plastic-beaked horridness? Even he was more tolerable than this baby-faced menace. Eventually he underwent surgery (after injuring his beak in a tragic accident) and transformed his plastic beak for some kind of cloth one.
If I were the person in charge of managing King Cake Baby, I would create a similar type of scenario.
