4. Michael Malone

Let’s start off by saying that as much as the Sacramento Kings fudged up by firing Malone, he wasn’t quite the Coach of the Year martyr everyone made him out to be. However, given Malone’s success with DeMarcus Cousins, it’s intriguing to imagine what he could do with another young, talented center like Nikola Vucevic.

Boogie’s success stemmed mostly from Boogie himself, but Malone had the Kings with a winning record — in the brutal West — until Cousins had his bout with viral meningitis. With a young, talented core in Orlando, Malone would probably be able to harness this team’s inner competitiveness…especially in the East.

Sacramento’s personnel never seemed suited to play great defense, but Malone had the Kings at eighth in the league in defensive efficiency before he was fired. The Magic need similar re-tooling on D, and they have a younger core with more potential than Malone had to work with in Sacramento.
