5. James Borrego

There aren’t too many coaches to choose from on the market, so we always need to at least mention the interim in such cases. Borrego has been Vaughn’s top assistant for the past two and a half years and before that, he served as an assistant with New Orleans and the San Antonio Spurs — where he was on the coaching staff for two championships.

In other words, it’s never a bad idea to replace one Popovich disciple with another. The Magic probably want to lose games from here on out, but in the event Borrego proves himself capable, maybe the Magic don’t need to search that far.

The only problem — aside from Borrego’s lack of head coaching experience — is that according to Yahoo! Sports’ Adrian Wojnarowski, the Magic plan on hiring their long-term replacement, most likely Scott Skiles, during the extended All-Star break.

That leaves Borrego with only four games to show the front office something substantial. With the team in the middle of turmoil/a 10-game losing streak, it’s unlikely the interim keeps his new job for more than a few weeks.
