Slam dunks are the most exciting plays in the NBA.

With no definite source of origin, its original label the “dunk shot” or “jam” was a tactic primarily used by taller players. It wasn’t initially accepted as many players and coaches felt it was showboating.

Over the years, its efficiency as a low-risk and high percentage shot was made popular by big men like Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell. However, when the NCAA instituted the Lew Alcindor rule, the nation took notice to the dunk shot. Dunks would live in infamy from that point, used primarily in playgrounds and street basketball.

It wasn’t until 1976 when the Lew Alcindor rule was rescinded and the dunking commenced.

Once it became a staple in the NBA, legendary Los Angeles Lakers announcer Chick Hearn donned the act with the title “slam dunk.” Since, it’s been a household favorite in the league and the greatest display of individual physical dominance.
