New Orleans Pelicans:

For the Pellies, this is a bit of a nothing trade. By shipping off Austin Rivers and his $2.4 million salary (plus $3.1 million for next season), New Orleans is getting rid of a draft bust who hasn’t been able to help the team in any discernible way.

The Pelicans are taking on quite a bit of extra salary, however, since Pondexter is owed $14 million over the next three and a half seasons.

Even with his struggles shooting the ball this season, Pondexter will probably be an upgrade over Rivers off the bench, and can at least provide New Orleans with a three-point threat that defenders have to worry about because of his history. But taking on that much extra salary for a washed-up shooter isn’t always advisable either.

Then again, this team is in quite a fight trying to beat out the Phoenix Suns and Oklahoma City Thunder for the West’s final playoff spot, so any upgrade, however minor, is a helpful move.
