Sacramento Kings: 5 Best Long-Term Coaching Options
2. Mike D’Antoni
Bear with me for a second. When Mike D’Antoni’s name comes up, most people think of his failures with the Los Angeles Lakers and New York Knicks. They think of how bad his teams were defensively or how he bears a remarkable resemblance to the face on every can of Pringles. None of this does much to boost his reputation as a respectable coach.
However, D’Antoni is the exact kind of coach the Kings are looking for. Sacramento’s front office wants to run-and-gun, to put up a bunch of points and to be exciting. The Kings actually need to improve defensively, but if there were any coach in the history of the NBA who might actually try that 5-on-4 defense, wouldn’t it be Mike D’Antoni?
Coaches are only as good as their talent, which is probably why D’Antoni failed in New York and L.A. Between Boogie, Rudy Gay, Ben McLemore and Darren Collison, D’Antoni would have enough up-and-coming talent to revamp Sacramento’s offense. It might not lead to the playoffs, but at this point I’m convinced Ranadive would just be happy as long as somebody pushed the team’s tempo and made games more exciting.
