In 1982, Moses Malone signed an offer sheet with the Philadelphia 76ers as a restricted free agent, but the Houston Rockets matched that offer for Malone, which kept Malone on the Rockets. Two weeks later, the Rockets traded Malone to 76ers. While that’s not technically a free agent signing, but I’m going to allow it because that’s basically what happened.
The weird thing was Malone was the MVP of the league the previous season.
As you would expect, Malone was the central piece of the 76ers while he was with the team and helped Dr. J lead the team to the 1982-83 NBA championship. He was also named NBA MVP for that season as well, making Malone the only player in NBA history to win the MVP award in consecutive seasons with two teams.
