The Sacramento Kings have agreed to a three-year, $40 million extension with Rudy Gay.

The Sacramento Kings have been one of the NBA’s best surprises early on in the season, and are currently sitting at 6-4 on the season. They should actually have a better record than that, as they have choked away two games that they should have won last week. Despite that fact, they have played extremely good basketball and small forward Rudy Gay is a big reason for the early season success that they have had.

According to a report from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports, the Kings have signed Gay to a thee-year extension worth $30 million.

Check out the statistics that Gay has put up for the Kings through their first 10 games:

Needless to say, those numbers are huge for the Kings and they have been perfect for the second option behind DeMarcus Cousins. Gay has received quite a bit of hate throughout his career for being a high-volume shooter and ball hog, but that hasn’t been the case this season. He has completely bought into the Kings’ system, and he is seeing major success due to the changes he has made in his game.

At 28 years of age, Gay is playing in the prime of career this season and the Kings will keep him for the majority of his prime. They strongly believe that they are talented enough to make a run at the playoffs this season, but they will need Gay and Cousins to continue leading the way. Gay has brought quite a bit of veteran leadership and experience to the young roster as well, which has been a major help.

It’s going to be very intriguing to see how the Kings play moving forward, and whether or not their early season play is legitimate. They have quite a bit of talent on their roster, but there is also a chance that they are outplaying their talent.

Sacramento did the right thing by locking Gay up to an extension right now after the way that he has played through the first ten games. He is a very important piece for them moving forward, and they signed him before he could have driven his price up even more. The Kings have been building towards the playoffs for quite some time now, and this could finally be the year that they take the jump and make it in.
