5. The point guard hydra is real

When the Suns notched a 94-89 home victory over the Spurs in their second game of the season, the box score let everyone know that Markieff Morris had a big night with 20 points and 11 rebounds. It showed that Isaiah Thomas had a huge night off the bench, going 10-for-17 from the floor en route to 23 points. And it also revealed that even with Goran Dragic (4-for-10) and Eric Bledsoe (3-for-15) struggling from the field, and the team going just 2-for-18 from downtown, the Suns were able to grind out a win against a quality opponent.

What the box score didn’t show is that Phoenix was also capable of beating the defending champs with Thomas, Dragic and Bledsoe all on the floor to close the game. For the last 4:35 of the game, with the Suns down three points, Phoenix excelled with all three point guards on the floor, closing the game out on a 10-2 run.

It’s a small sample size, but it’s definitely encouraging that not only were the Suns able to defend one of the league’s most potent offenses with three point guards in the lineup, but that they were able to turn that speed advantage into points on the other end. Speaking of which, that brings us to our next important point…
