It shouldn’t come as any surprise that San Antonio didn’t keep these guys around with the depth of experienced and established talent filling the roster.
Spurs final 15-man roster:
- Tony Parker
- Tim Duncan
- Kawhi Leonard
- Manu Ginobli
- Boris Diaw
- Danny Green
- Kyle Anderson
- Tiago Splitter
- Marco Belinelli
- Cory Jospeh
- Jeff Ayres
- Aron Baynes
- Austin Daye
- Patrick Mills
- Matt Bonner
Each of the 15 guys on the final roster have fully guaranteed deals.
As for the five guys who have been waived over the past few days, they could each potentially be assigned to the San Antonio’s D-League team, the Austin Spurs.
Of the five, a name you should definitely expect to hear more of in the near future, and potentially get called up to the Spurs if injuries occur is the undrafted rookie, Cotton.
San Antonio is currently fairly thin at the point guard position with Patty Mills out until around December after shoulder surgery, which leaves Tony Parker’s only help as Cory Joseph, although, Marco Belinelli and Manu Ginobil could help run the show at times.
But Cotton could become a very utilized piece as a backup guard if injuries or something does take it’s toll on the Spurs’ backcourt. In his last preseason game against the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday, Cotton racked up eight points in only 7:34 minutes of action.
Prior to that, Cotton compiled nine points and three assists against the Kings.
With his versatility as a fearless scorer and trustworthy floor general, he should be the first name you hear being called upon, from what will likely be the Austin Spurs, and asked to fill a roster spot. But as of now, he’s on the outside looking in.
The Spurs begin regular season play Tuesday night against the Mavericks at home in San Antonio.
