The NBA established the David J. Stern Sports Scholarship today, to provide promising students the chance to continue their sports management studies. NBA commissioner Adam Silver made the announcement earlier today in an official NBA press release, and this is a great scholarship for the NBA to be creating to help out students who need it.
Silver made a few comments about the scholarship, and mentioned a bit of the mentoring that he received from Stern.
“As someone who knows first-hand the value of David Stern’s mentorship, I am thrilled that we are able to provide this opportunity to a worthy candidate each year. David has always emphasized the importance of a strong education and this scholarship is another example of his commitment to learning.”
To be eligible to receive the scholarship, the student must have successfully completed their first year of college. Each recipient of the scholarship will receive $30,000 ($10,000 per year) towards their tuition costs and will also be awarded with an NBA internship after his/her junior year of college. The Thurgood Marshall College Fund (TMCF) will administer the program and select finalists annually.

This scholarship will begin in the fall of 2015 to a student entering his/her sophomore year of college.
Obviously this is good to see from the NBA, and they are doing their best to give back to the community. David Stern may not have been the most well liked commissioner that the NBA has ever had, but he did do some great things for the league. It will be interesting to see what the students that receive this award go on to do in their respective careers.
