5. Marcus Smart

In his few preseason games, Smart has showed advanced skill on the defensive end. Guards have grown weary of seeing him constantly in their faces, and big men are wondering how to knock him off course. Although he missed all eight of his shots in the Celtics preseason opener, Smart’s key contribution on D gave coach Brad Stevens and Celtics fans a glimpse into what his calling card will be for the regular season.

He’s ready to lead an NBA team right now. He’s just not ready to take the big shots; it’s rare that rookies are that poised and confident when they enter the league. The Celtics have found their point guard of the future, and giving Smart considerable minutes will be key to grooming him and Avery Bradley as one of the best backcourts in the league for years to come.
