Stock Up: Defense

Not a dribble of the season has been played, but defense is already a big winner for the new edition of the Los Angeles Lakers.

Why? They are actually talking about playing it.

Coach Byron Scott has preached about defense in almost every avenue that he has had the opportunity to. He has molded his potential starting lineup to give the team a chance to compete on that side of the ball, and will use defense as a barometer for how players will earn their minutes.

This is a contrasting approach to that of the last regime to say the least.

Scott’s new offensive system will actually lend itself to a more defensive mentality as well, because it will look more like the triangle offense than the fast paced system that we saw last year. While it does not make a huge difference, just a different pace should help this team focus more on the side of the ball that has troubled them so much the past few seasons.

Defense is alive and well for the Lakers, at least the idea of it, and for that reason the stock is pointing straight up for this club.
