May 9, 2010, Cavaliers vs. Celtics

Celtics win 97-87

The Cavs rolled into the playoffs with the overall No. 1 seed and the swagger that goes with winning 61 games. Twenty-five-year-old LeBron was the best player in the NBA, Cleveland is at least top seven in Offensive AND Defensive Rating, and every ESPN expert picks Cleveland to oust the Celtics in their second-round matchup.

Rondo didn’t care. His 20.7 ppg, 6.3 rpg, and 11.8 apg on 54 percent shooting put him neck and neck with LeBron for the most impactful player in the series, and his Game 4 was the creme de la creme:

29 points. 18 rebounds, 13 assists.

Rondo outdueled reigning MVP LeBron James and out-rebounded Shaquille O’Neal, Kevin Garnett, Rasheed Wallace, and Glen Davis combined, all by himself. Rajon unveiled the full repertoire: tear drops, Euro-steps, pinpoint passes. You know how many players in the last 18 years can boast that they’ve reached a stat-line like 29-18-13 or better in a game? One. Rajon Rondo.

Boston won the series in six games, setting off the chain reaction that saw James take his talents to South Beach.
