For NBA fans there are a number of landmark events that act as indicators for how long they have to wait before meaningful basketball returns. First, there’s the draft, that’s quickly followed by Summer League, and then like last night, we get to the release of the schedule. With the release of the Atlanta Hawks’ schedule, players and fans alike can start to look ahead, plan and focus on the upcoming season.

It’s common to see people arguing the irrelevance of the schedule, but there are plenty of reasons that it holds importance. Sure, every team is going to play 82 times, and each team will play the other at least twice, but the order that happens in can be very significant. Seasons can be decided depending on the length of a road trip, or the timing of a particularly tough spell of games, and although it’s not necessarily all apparent now, the schedule is an important factor.

Of course, there are plenty of other reasons that fans are always eager to look at the schedule too. Let’s try to break down some of them in regards to the Atlanta Hawks.
