Memphis Grizzlies: A Position-by-Position Breakdown (Shooting Guards)
By Greg Chin
Jordan Adams
I recently wrote an article on Jordan Adams’ performances in Summer League. Read it for more information on the Grizzlies’ new rookie.
Strengths: Scoring, Ball Handling
Adams came into the draft with a reputation for being an efficient scorer. He did not disappoint with his performances in Summer League, where he showcased his range. He will provide the Grizzlies with more floor spacing, and ranged shooting – something the Grizzlies have struggled with in recent seasons.
On the occasions where Adams was utilised as a lead ballhandler, he put on a show. Many analysts and commentators were surprised by his ability to finish through contract, given his smaller frame and a reported lack of athleticism. It will get tougher in the NBA, where the bodies are bigger and the hits feel harder. It will be interesting to see if Adams can keep this up in a professional setting.
Weaknesses: Lack of Athleticism, Defense
Recording a 29.5 inch vertical leap, Adams was one of the least athletic guards in the draft. He has had to deal with being less athletic than his opponent for most of his young career, and has found ways to counter this weakness. Still, there might be growing pains ahead for the young rookie, as he will be matched up against some of the best athletes in the world in the NBA.
During his performances in Summer League, Adams showed a tendency to drift in and out of games defensively. There were moments where he would lose his man on a possession, or attempt a steal, only for it to backfire. The young rookie will have to realize quickly that the Grizzlies pride themselves on defense, and will have to put in more effort on the defensive end to earn minutes.
Role and Expectations
As of now, Adams is an unknown quantity. The scoring aspect of his game shows promise, but unfortunately his size and lack of athleticism could a cause for major concern in the NBA. Personally, I am hoping that Adams is able to fight the doubters and prove, just like he’s had to repeatedly, that he has learned ways to counter his weaknesses.
As mentioned in my other article, Adams appears to be an inverse of Tony Allen. Adams provides scoring, while Allen provides defense. Both will have to compete for backup minutes, as it seems like Courtney Lee will be keeping the starting spot.
Perhaps both Allen and Adams will have spot minutes, and be decided on a game-to-game basis, depending on the needs of the game.
