Although Stan Van Gundy is reportedly very pleased with the Detroit Pistons offseason acquisitions, his team could still be far from done. Their last big move will center around their restricted free agent Greg Monroe, and whether he stays in the Motor City or moves on elsewhere.

If it’s the latter of the two, the Pistons could do worse in the remaining free agent pool than to consider Mike Scott of the Atlanta Hawks.

Last year, Scott showed incredible progress for only his second season, and became a breakout offensive machine off the Atlanta bench. Just like Monroe, Scott is also a restricted free agent this summer, and his current situation seems a little complex.

With the Hawks selecting another power forward, Adreian Payne, in the recent draft, many commentators felt it spelled the end for Scott’s time in Atlanta. In the time since, whispers around the league were suggesting this wasn’t true, and that Atlanta was planning on keeping Scott as long as he was coming back at a reasonable price.

Following an excellent season, and in particular an explosive playoff series, it’s no surprise that interest in Scott would be high. Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports gave everyone an idea of just how high it is though, as he highlighted international interest in Scott on Twitter Tuesday.

Mike Scott is nowhere near the caliber of player that Greg Monroe is, and that’s not what is being suggested at all here. If Monroe is offered a contract that the Pistons don’t feel comfortable in matching though, they might be better served adding multiple cheaper contributors who will be a better fit in Van Gundy’s style of basketball.

Let’s take a look at why in that situation, Mike Scott should be high on Detroit’s list.
