As the clock continues to tick down on NBA free agency, the pool of remaining options continues to get more and more shallow. Still, there can be advantages to still having cap space at this time. The players who are yet to tie up deals end up with less and less options, and as a result can be got at discounted prices.

One such player who this could apply to this year is Shawn Marion.

The Matrix, as Marion is nicknamed, has been involved in rumors since the opening of free agency, and yet almost a month later he’s still waiting on his number to be called. Players like Marion can be very valuable and more often than not find themselves in high demand.

Marion still has plenty left in the tank as he showed last year, and as a former All-Star and NBA champion, there’s a lot he can add to a locker room.

One of the teams with enough cap space remaining to still be a player in the latter stages of the market is Atlanta. The Hawks have already strengthened on the wings this summer, but after a failed pursuit of Luol Deng, it would be no surprise if they were still on the lookout for greater depth there.

With the possibility that Elton Brand won’t return to Atlanta next year too, the Hawks could possibly do with adding another veteran to a young core.

The Hawks and Marion make for an intriguing fit, so let’s take a closer look at why it could work out between them.
