Depth

First and foremost, as with Van Gundy’s previous signings this summer, Butler and Augustin help to provide the team with genuine depth and options. There’s every chance that neither player will be a starter, but if either was required to move into the starting five at any stage during the season, they would more than capable of performing.

Butler gives the team a true small forward option unlike any they had last season really. Butler will help space the floor, and should do away with the need to play Josh Smith at the 3 at all.

At point guard, if Brandon Jennings is having one of his “off” nights, Augustin is a good option to step in and play significant minutes. He showed in Chicago last season that he can be highly effective in that role.
