Sacramento Kings: Is Rajon Rondo A Realistic Option?
By Adam McGee
Is Rondo Surplus To Requirements?
If we rewind the clock back to last Thursday night, shortly before the Kings drafted Nik Stauskas, the Celtics chose Marcus Smart with the sixth overall pick. There are a lot of similarities in the playing styles of Smart and Rondo, and as a result, the deal set the rumor mill turning.
Smart has great defensive instincts, yet struggles with his shooting. This makes the prospect of pairing him alongside Rondo in a non-shooting backcourt seem very unlikely.
Considering that the Celtics have extended a qualifying offer to restricted free agent Avery Bradley, there are enough indicators to say that the Celtics backcourt may need an injection of offense.
Having drafted a point guard with such a valuable pick, the Celtics should feel the need to find him playing time. The precedent for this was set yesterday by the Orlando Magic, who having drafted Elfrid Payton, decided to waive their veteran starter Jameer Nelson.
If the Celtics plan on following suit, Rondo will be on the market.
