Zach LaVine, SG, UCLA

LaVine has been rocketing up draft boards since the process began. The catalyst? Everyone’s favorite word.

Potential.

LaVine has a 6’10” wingspan at 6’5”, and is super young at only 19 years old. He showed some shooting touch at UCLA, but was a strong finisher even as that shooting cooled. He enters the draft as that player that many teams are eyeing, and there’s no question he is on the rise.

But how does he fit in the Timberwolves organization?

I think if LaVine is the pick, it is a signal that Flip Saunders is waving the white flag concerning Kevin Love. I am not sure that LaVine is ready to play a role in the league yet, though he could be good down the road, and a developmental project is not something that is going to help this team win now.

Looking towards the future, LaVine could provide some much-needed athleticism to the roster, and eventually supplant Kevin Martin as a starter if all goes well.
