When Josh Smith was still on the board when the Hawks 17th pick came around in 2004, it was a bit of a no-brainer for the front office. Smith was the hometown kid who was phenomenal in high school, and had all the potential to make him one of the elite forwards in the NBA.

Although Smith’s decision-making would make him a slightly divisive figure for Hawks fans during his nine seasons with the team, his contributions can’t be ignored. Smith is a do it all forward, and a look at the all-time Hawks stats leaders quickly shows just how productive Smith was in Atlanta.

Having now moved on to the Detroit Pistons, Smith is struggling to fit in in a different team, in a different city. If he can get his game together again, the All-Star appearance that eluded him in Atlanta could still be a possibility though.
