McGary’s back issues this past season are a clear red flag and his suspension for using marijuana provides a green flag of its own, but anyone who watched McGary play in the 2013 NCAA tournament saw the potential. It’s tough to gauge how well those four games represent the full extent of what we can expect from him in the NBA, but McGary has the build and determination to be a steal in this draft in the right environment.

It’s hard to argue Jeff Hornacek doesn’t fit the description of “the right environment,” and he’d certainly be able to harness McGary’s terrific motor and turn it into something useful coming off the bench. He’s a bit of a risk and there’s no guarantee he can knock down jump shots or score in the post on NBA bigs, but it won’t be for a lack of effort and he’s a pretty skilled passer for his position. Depending on who’s still available at No. 27, McGary is at least worth looking at.
