Toronto Raptors: A Review Of 4 Draft Day Trades
June 24, 1998
Of all the draft day trades made by the Raptors, this one was by far the most significant.
This was when they drafted Antawn Jamison with the fourth pick and traded him to the Golden State Warriors for the fifth overall pick, Vince Carter.
General Manager Glen Grunwald had wanted Carter all along, so this round-about way of acquiring him was done to save a few bucks, as the salary for the fifth pick was slightly less.
Carter and Jamison, who were teammates at the University of North Carolina, were both NBA-ready players, but it was Carter who was destined to star for the Raptors and put them on the map.
By comparison, Jamison has a career scoring average of 18.5 points in 1,083 games, while Carter has averaged 20.2 points in 1,148 appearances.
The following day, the Raptors traded Marcus Camby to the New York Knicks for Sean Marks and Charles Oakley. The Raptors had selected Camby with the second overall pick in 1996.
