Mehmet Okur

Born in Turkey, Mehmet Okur didn’t make his way to the NBA until 2001. When he entered the draft, as can happen with many international players, there was an element of the unknown about him and he dropped lower than he should have.

The team that took the gamble was Detroit with the 37th pick, and it proved to be worthwhile. In his two years in the Motor City, Okur was a key rotational player, and a key part of the depth that helped the Pistons to win the 2004 NBA title.

After that season, Okur moved on to the Utah Jazz and had a long and productive career as a second rounder in the NBA.
