Welcome to the Daily NBA Fix for Monday, March 17, the morning after Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson went collectively unconscious in the second half of an NBA game.
The Golden State Warriors were 19:16 away from trailing the Portland Trail Blazers by 3½ games in for the fifth seed in the Western Conference, trailing by 18 points and seemingly dead in the water.
Then Curry and Thompson made sure that didn’t happen. The Splash Brothers, as they are known, combined to score 64 points—51 of them in the second half and 30 in the fourth quarter—to lead the Warriors all the way back for a 113-112 win Sunday night at the Moda Center in Portland.
Nicolas Batum had a chance to tie the game in the closing seconds, but missed a free throw and couldn’t connect on a last-moment 3-ball. So instead of being ½ game behind the Rockets for fourth out West, the Trail Blazers are instead 1½ up on the Warriors and 1½ back of Houston.
And, oh those guards for the Warriors. Curry was 11-for-24 overall and 6-of-12 from 3-point range on the night, while Thompson his 10-of-19 and 3-of-7.
In the second half, they were a combined 16-for-29 and 8-for-14. In the fourth quarter, it was 8-for-14 and 6-for-9.
Thompson and Curry were so good Sunday night they should have had their own warning label: Caution—Flammable.
