NBA Rookie Rankings 12/22/13: Up and Down Week for Trey Burke Costs Him Dearly
By Nathan Giese
3. Trey Burke, Utah Jazz
As much hard as it is to keep Trey Burke out of the top two for yet another week, the evidence proves that he’s just not ready, brother.
Burke’s rough week started against Miami, where the veteran Heat made the rookie look like a rookie. Shocking, isn’t? However, Burke came back against the Orlando Magic and dropped a career-high 30 points (the highest point total for a rookie this season) while also coming away with seven rebounds and eight assists. This game should’ve elevated Burke into the second slot with Carter-Williams still out. “Should’ve” being the appropriate word.
Burke came off of the Magic game and finished with a heart pounding two points on 1-for-8 shooting against the Atlanta Hawks in a blowout defeat. In games not played against the Magic this week, Burke shot 2-for-16 for five points, including shooting 1-for-7 from 3-point range.
Consistency is key for the Rookie Rankings. Burke has not been able to prove he can do that yet. Once he can, then he’s a real contender for the Rookie of the Year award. Unfortunately, he’s not there yet.
