Where Could Spencer Hawes Be Traded To?
The Philadelphia 76ers have been one of the more surprising teams so far in the NBA and 7’0’’ center Spencer Hawes has been a big part of that. Hawes has been one of the best centers so far this season on the offensive end. The former Sacramento King is averaging 16.8 points, 10.3 rebounds, 3.1 assists and 1.6 blocks per game. He is shooting the lights out from downtown; making .491 percent of his 3-pointers, of which he attempts close to four per game.
However, as the memo for the 76ers is to be bad, trading Hawes is something that will likely happen before the season is over. Let’s try and find three possible places for Hawes.
Cleveland Cavaliers
The Cleveland Cavaliers were supposed to be good this season. And it hasn’t happened. A panic trade for Spencer Hawes could be on the cards. Andrew Bynum’s knees are unreliable — shock — and Anderson Varejao hasn’t looked the same All-Star level player he looked last season before his injuries. There isn’t a lot of offense on the team — the Cavs rank 25th in points per game — and Hawes could come in and dramatically help on that end of the floor. His outside shooting and interior passing makes him a nice pick-and-pop option for Kyrie Irving.
Memphis Grizzlies
Marc Gasol could be out for up to 12 weeks, according to reports. Trading for Spencer Hawes could give the Griz a reliable offensive weapon to give some of what Gasol does. Of course, he isn’t half as good as Gasol on the defensive end, but few are. Even when Gasol comes back, having Hawes at the 4 means Zach Randolph — who needs all the rest he can get — can spend some time riding the pine.
Oklahoma City Thunder
The Oklahoma City Thunder have shot the ball pretty woefully from 3-point range so far this season. They rank 25th in 3-point percentage and Hawes could come in and provide a real threat from the outside. There’s an argument that he could actually increase his 3-point shooting percentage from 49 percent if playing next to Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. The Sixers could even take that Kendrick Perkins contract.
