Los Angeles Lakers: The Role Of Chris Kaman

Chris Kaman and the Los Angeles Lakers seemed like an unlikely match at the start of the free-agency period, but as the veteran big man has been locked in, we will see his role in L.A. Kaman is facing the improbable task of filling the shoes of All-Star center Dwight Howard. As a former Dallas Maverick, Kaman will look to provide versatility to the frontcourt of L.A. that a Mike D’Antoni offense welcomes.  Many are going into the season with questions concerning Kaman’s defensive presence and also his age on an old Lakers roster. There aren’t too many dominant big men in the NBA, but maybe the Lakers are assembling one at a bargain by adding the veteran center.

Playing alongside Pau Gasol could offer some surprises to critics this season. Many analysts are counting out the Lakers, but with the abilities of each player, there could possibly be plenty of surprises to come from their arsenal. Kaman, arguably, compliments Gasol on the offensive end much better than Howard. With his ability to play near the free-throw line, Kaman can provide Gasol with more freedom to operate on the inside.

We all know the significance of Gasol, as an offensive threat. During their 2009 and 2010 championship runs, the Lakers were dominant with a combination of Andrew Bynum, Lamar Odom and Pau Gasol as their frontcourt. Chris Kaman will provide the Lakers with another threat that must be accounted for by opponents. His ability to pass is not equivalent to that of Gasol’s, but it will allow the offense to run from the post on occasion.  Kaman is a capable shooter from the center position, so this will allow him to stretch out defenses. In today’s NBA, where small ball rules the league, Kaman may help the offensive flow of the Lakers. The big question that Mike D’Antoni will be faced with is whether the Lakers will allow Kaman to start or play as a reserve behind Gasol. Regardless, it seems as if the Lakers may be able to produce in bunches with a good, offensive front line.
