Boston Celtics: Rajon Rondo Out Indefinitely With A Torn ACL
When Rajon Rondo was confirmed as out for the Boston Celtics’ game against the Miami Heat in Boston on Sunday, the Internet became filled with rumors that the All-Star point guard had suffered the same fate as Derrick Rose and Ricky Rubio before him–the dreaded torn ACL.
The injury occurred when Rondo hyperextended his right knee in Boston’s double-overtime loss to the Hawks in Atlanta on Friday.
An immediate date for his return, or even a timetable for his surgery, hasn’t been determined yet. What we do know is that he’ll definitely be out for not only the All-Star Game in Houston on Feb. 17–where he was scheduled to start–but fpr the rest of the 2012-13 season. That is a dagger in the heart of Celtic fans around the world.
Optimism in the Celtic camp seemed high, as the 26-year-old had taken a small part in the warmup at the TD Garden Sunday afternoon. This optimism soon swung itself into negativity as Rondo still felt uncomfortable. He was then sent to the New England Baptist Hospital for an MRI scan, which revealed that he had, in fact, torn his ACL.
Doris Burke confirmed this on ESPN–and the Celtics will now have to come to terms with life without their star player. Rondo leads the league in assists, averaging 11.1 per game. He also helps out in scoring–he is the third-leading scorer for the Celtics, averaging 13.7 points per game.
The numbers themselves don’t really do the Louisville, Ky.-born guard justice. He’s enigmatic, to say the very least. The phrase “floor general” gets thrown around a lot, but for someone of Rondo’s ability, it feels like the perfect phrase to describe him.
There are few that have the knowledge or technique when it comes to passing and the different angles and intangibles when throwing the basketball.
Even as a neutral, it’s hard to feel anything but sympathy for Rajon Rondo and the Boston Celtics. At his best he is one of the most exciting players to watch in the NBA – and even despite the Celtics’ struggles so far this season, I always felt that with Rondo at the helm, they could go deep in the postseason.
Now it will be hard to see them progressing past the first round.
