Luis Scola: Phoenix Suns’ Newest Signing A Major Upgrade

Luis Scola was awarded via auction to the Phoenix Suns after being amnestied by the Houston Rockets. He’ll replace Channing Frye at the starting power forward position and will bring some much-needed toughness to the desert.
Scola is a much better rebounder than Frye although the Suns will miss the three-point ability that Frye brings. In addition, Scola is a below-the-rim kind of player at this point in his career as you can see in the highlight package shown here.
I’ve been saying for years that the Suns were lacking players that had a bit of “nasty” in them. Figuratively speaking, when the Suns were punched in the mouth, they rolled over and didn’t respond.
Scola is the kind of player who won’t allow that. He had multiple run-ins with Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves last year and showed that he won’t be disrespected.
The acquisition of Scola also has another smaller bonus and that’s the ability to move Michael Beasley to the small forward spot and Jared Dudley back to the bench. This provides some flexibility when the inevitable injuries come or during games when foul trouble alters the rotation.
All in all, Scola was a great signing for the Suns and even though he’s not the future of the club, he’ll be a great addition for the next few years.
