Three games into the 2018-19 season, the Detroit Pistons are 4-0. They could be destined for greatness, but fans should temper expectations with these reactions.

The Detroit Pistons have started the 2018-19 season 4-0. They knocked off the rebuilding Chicago Bulls and Brooklyn Nets, while they beat the shorthanded Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday night. Some exciting developments have happened early in the season for a team that is midway between a rebuild and contention. Head coach Dwane Casey has the team playing well thus far, but it’s unclear how real these developments are in the long-term.

They were expected to improve under Casey, as he was a clear upgrade over his predecessor Stan Van Gundy. However, it’s unlikely that they were expected to start the season 4-0, which they did after beating the Cleveland Cavaliers Thursday night. We’ve seen an uptick in the team’s overall defense, but the offense has suffered as a result. There have also been some major improvements for key players such as power forward Blake Griffin.

Despite these great things, there are some reasons for skepticism that these changes may not last. It’s fun to get excited, especially when the team is playing well, but it’s always smart to stay grounded and view the stats to get the whole story. This is exactly what Pistons fans everywhere should be doing in the early weeks of this long season.
