The Washington Wizards banked on more upside when they signed reigning Most Improved Player Gilbert Arenas as a free agent in August 2003.
Turns out, they were right.
Arenas was a three-time All-Star with the Wizards, earning three All-NBA selections as well.
He led the NBA in 3-pointers in 2006-07 after finishing second in 2005-06 and fifth in 2004-05.
Arenas also was third in the league in minutes per game in both 2004-05 and 2005-06 and finished fourth in both scoring and steals in 2005-06 and followed that up with a third-place showing in the scoring race in 2006-07.
But injuries and an off-the-court incident marred his later days in D.C. and he was suspended for much of the 2009-10 campaign after it was learned he had unloaded firearms stored in his locker.
In December 2010, Arenas was traded to the Orlando Magic for Rashard Lewis.
In parts of eight seasons in Washington, Arenas averaged 25 points, 5.7 assists, 4.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals in 39.4 minutes per game, shooting .422/.357/.809.
Drafted in the second round out of Arizona by the Golden State Warriors in the 2001 NBA Draft, Arenas was named the NBA’s Most Improved Player in 2002-03 before signing with the Wizards.
Orlando waived Arenas under the amnesty clause in December 2011 and he signed with the Memphis Grizzlies in March 2012. He played in China in 2012-13 and has not yet announced a retirement from pro basketball, despite not playing for two seasons.
Arenas is 46th in NBA history with an average of 20.7 points per game.
